Journey Toward National Registeration
Zebedee and I will be taking an extensive journey toward becoming a nationally registered therapy dog team.
Step 1: AKC STAR PUPPY
STAR stands for socializing, training, activity, and responsible owner. This program is "practical and functional and teaches supplies to tolerate grooming, handling, and basic exams as well as being well mannered.
During this 6 week course, Zebedee will learn many different behaviors, as will I, that ensures we can move on to our next step.
STEP 2: CANINE GOOD CITIZEN
The Canine Good Citizen program is an expert training program to help Zebedee and I be the best team together.
CGC is a 10-skill test that teaches good manners to dogs and responsible dog ownership. These 10 items include: accepting a friendly stranger, sitting politely to be pet, appearance, and grooming, walking on a loose leash, walking through a crowd, sit and down on cue and staying in place, coming when called, reactions to other dogs, reaction to distraction, and supervised separation.
STEP 3: AKC THERAPY DOG
The final step for our efforts toward becoming a nationally registered therapy dog team is to partner with an AKC-approved partner for deepened training on-site in different situations and evaluations. We will be working with Pet Partners. Upon a passing evaluation, Zebby and I will work with clients through Piper's private practice counseling with animal-assisted therapy and with other community partners.
